Cherries boss praises his team’s performance as they ‘finish tired’

Andoni Iraola appeared happy with his side for their effort, despite conceding a 93rd minute equaliser against Brentford.

The Cherries were behind after just seven minutes after a clever free kick from Mathias Jensen caught Norberto Neto out at his near post.

Despite an early set back, Iraola’s men showed a steely determination.

Dominic Solanke brought the scores level with a great solo effort after being played to by Marcos Senesi.

David Brooks got his first goal since July 2020 after great work from Marcus Tavernier.

Brooks faked out Mark Flekken and smashed in for 2-1 Bournemouth.

Bryan Mbuemo levelled the scores in added on time as the points were shared.

The Bees dominated the majority of proceedings and a point was probably a good result for the Cherries.

What has Andoni Iraola said?

The goal to put his side 2-1 up sparked something in the Brentford side, and saw them change their tactical approach.

This was something Iraola picked up on: “They changed their system, they have gone with three at the back.

“Obviously they were losing the game, so they had to push.”

Balls into the box became the weapon of choice for Thomas Frank’s side, something which had to be combatted as the game ebbed away.

This saw the Spaniard make a change to his side: “We needed some help, especially for set-pieces where they have very good players.

“We needed Mepham’s help for the duels, for all those crosses that we will receive in the last minutes.”

Despite a point away at the GTEC Community Stadium being positive, a late equaliser clearly annoyed the Cherries’ boss: “It didn’t work, because we conceded a second goal.”

This could be down to the effort being put in by every player throughout the game.

On this point, Iraola said: “It’s true that we finished tired, especially Milos Kerkez finished tired, Marcos Senesi also.”

This wasn’t a point of concern for the manager however: “It is something normal, especially as it was hot, with the rhythm of the game and a lot of transitions from both teams.”

Disappointing to concede so late, but there are positives to be taken as the squad acclimatise to Iraola’s style.
