Bournemouth manager, Andoni Iraola has insisted that he doesn’t attempt to convince players to sign new contracts, they make that decision themselves.

Philip Billing is the latest man to sign a new deal with the Cherries, confirming his stay with the club until 2027.

The Dane has been one of the most important players at the Vitality since signing back in 2019.

Signing from Huddersfield Town, he has revolutionised his game transitioning from a defensive midfielder to a number 10.

In four years with Bournemouth, the midfielder has gone onto make 163 appearances and score 29 goals.

He was a big part of the side that gained promotion and maintained a Premier League place in the previous campaign.

There were rumours of teams sniffing around Billing as his contract ran down, but his new deal was signed earlier in the season.

What has Andoni Iraola said about Philip Billing?

Despite what fans may think, Iraola did not go to the Danish man and beg him to sign a new deal, quite the opposite.

On the matter, the Spaniard said: “No, I don’t think we should try to convince him.

“I think these are decisions that players have to take.”

It appears the new Cherries boss has taken the point of view that if you don’t want to be here you can go.

Although it could be a risky game to play, it will maintain a strong squad unity and a drive to progress as a team for Bournemouth.

When asked why he operated in this fashion, he said: “We are talking about their future. They are smart enough, Philip is smart enough to know that he would have other options, for sure.”

With that being said, Iraola was happy to keep his man: “But for me it is very big news, because we keep Philip, who I consider a very good player.

“Also because in his situation he has decided to bet for AFC Bournemouth. I think it is very good for everyone.”

Positive news for the club, and a fresh way of thinking from the boss.
