How Bournemouth must respond to Castrovilli disaster

Bournemouth’s move to sign Gaetano Castrovilli has broken down.

As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, writing on his Twitter page, Bournemouth’s deal to bring Gaetano Castrovilli to the club has collapsed after the player failed his medical assessment.

There are various reasons why a player might fail a medical when trying to sign with a new club. Whatever the reason for Castrovilli’s failure, it was enough to convince Bournemouth to pull the plug on the €14 million (roughly equivalent to £12 million) deal with Fiorentina.

This news will come as a major blow to Cherries boss Andoni Iraola, who has publicly stated his desire to bolster his midfield contingent. Castrovilli would have been a brilliant addition to the Spaniard’s squad, and has the quality to flourish in the Premier League, but it isn’t to be.

Bournemouth must now consider alternative midfield targets. Given how far along they clearly were in the process of signing Castrovilli, it will be a major frustration to now go back to square one in pursuit of another midfielder.

What next for Bournemouth?

It will now be more pressing than ever for the club to get a deal to bring Alex Scott to the Vitality Stadium over the line. It is also possible that the south coast club might go back in for Castrovilli later down the line, perhaps in the January transfer window, if the issue that impacted the player’s failed medical is something that could have been addressed by then.

In the meantime, Iraola may consider other midfielders who are known to be available this summer. For instance, Arsenal’s Albert Sambi Lokonga is on the market. However, the Cherries will need to act fast, as Burnley are also interested in the young Belgian.

As for Castrovilli, the 26-year-old will return to Fiorentina and seemingly continue to feature for the club in Serie A.
