Liverpool could join Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly following deadline day interest from the latter.

The Reds had strong interest in various centre backs this summer with Levi Colwill one of the strongest links.

With Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip injury prone in recent seasons, a new defender would have improved their squad.

Tottenham were in a similar predicament, eventually signing Micky van de Ven prior to the start of the season.

The North Londoners tried to sign Kelly late into the transfer window but when Eric Dier wouldn’t leave the club, the deal cooled off.

Now it appears Jurgen Klopp wants to sign the Bournemouth man.

Why do Liverpool want Lloyd Kelly?

The main reason is to add to their squad with injuries and a lack of depth an issue for the Reds as they look for Champions League football.

Joel Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season also.

Virgil Van Dijk is now 32-years old and not getting any younger so young recruits could be handy.

Like Matip, Kelly is out of contract at in the summer of 2024 which would potentially see a deal be easier and at a cut price.

The former Bristol City man signed for the Cherries in 2019 for a fee in the region of £13 million.

With Illia Zabarnyi, Chris Mepham and Marcos Sensi, the only other senior centre backs at the club, Bournemouth would need enough to replace him.

After the international break, Joe Gomez and Matip will be the only fit centre backs left at Anfield.

For the sake of Bournemouth, hopefully Kelly stays but if a bid comes in from a side like Liverpool, it will be hard to turn down.
